Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson picked up 7th grade student Jason B. in a limo from his house and took him to E.T. Richardson School in Springfield, PA. Upon arrival, they both visited the Principal’s office, then DeSean spoke to students in a school assembly about the importance of good health. During the visit, Jackson led kids in an NFL Ultimate Physical Education Class, as part of NFL’s PLAY 60 campaign, helping youth get 60 minutes of exercise a day through various fitness activities.

Additionally, the NFL and JCPenney this year have donated funds to support schools in each of these communities, giving children the chance to benefit from programs that encourage the development of healthy lifestyles, improved social skills and enhanced academic performance. Each school also received an equipment donation from Wilson, the official football of the NFL.

DeSean and Shady McCoy

LeSean McCoy is hosting his second annual celebrity softball game this Saturday Night at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster. The Eagles running back and Bishop McDevitt grad has a very impressive lineup set for this year’s contest. The first year was no disappointment as McCoy brought current and former Eagles like Brian Westbrook, DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick to the game. He has called on more of his NFL friends like Darrelle Revis, Ray Rice, Torrey Smith, Asante Samuel, Jared Odrick and Dominique Rodgers–Cromartie. Event organizers say there are more big names on the list.

“We’re encouraging people to come out Saturday Night to see who we have,” says Paul Kreider of the LeSean McCoy Foundation. “We have a very good list of Eagles players coming as well as players from the NFL. We also have some surprises.”

Gates open at five o’clock. There is a home run derby at six followed by the game at seven.

Limited tickets are still available. Dugout box seats are $40, field box seats are $20 and lawn seats are $10. A special “All-You-Can Eat” Hess Barbeque picnic is available for $60. To purchase tickets, go to http://www.LancasterBarnstormers.com or visit the Lancaster KIA Box Office at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

DeSean Jackson: Complex Character and Pretty Fascinating Study…..

From @brookman_doug: does it seem like DJax is just messing around constantly?

DeSean Jackson can’t be painted with a single brush. He is a complex character and a pretty fascinating study. If you are just going off Instagram or Twitter, then you’ll probably associate Jackson with Jaccpot and Vegas and frivolous spending. If you see him in the locker room during the season, you may be greeted with a scowl and a cold shoulder. If you watch the documentary, you will see a kid that has been rigorously training for this job since he was in Pop Warner, and realize that his family pushed him really hard.

If you saw him at the screening of his brother’s movie [The Making of a Father’s Dream]
a couple weeks back, you would notice that his scowl was nowhere to be found, and that his rebel image gave way to that of a considerate, thoughtful family man. You would have witnessed him throwing his arm around Tom Seagraves, who is in the middle of a battle with pancreatic cancer, while offering him words of encouragement.

So no, I don’t think Jackson messes around constantly. I think he messes around, sometimes too much. I think he is the rebel, and the family man; the kid who loves the game and the kid who feels burdened by it. He has all sorts of sides to him.

Gayle Jackson: Her Perspective On the DeSean Jackson Story and Her Son

Gayle

I had an opportunity to speak with Gayle Jackson, DeSean Jackson’s mother, after a private screening of the documentary “The Making of a Father’s Dream,” which was released on Father’s Day. How did it feel to relive such emotional moments in her family’s history, and for the world to be see such a different side of her NFL star son?

The film is the product of 18 years of footage taken by Byron Jackson, DeSean’s older brother, from when DeSean was just five years old through his time in the NFL. Byron joined up with Kip (producer) and Kern (director) Konwiser to shape the footage into the compelling story presented in “A Father’s Dream.” But in addition to their collective talents, Mrs. Jackson believes that a higher power had a hand in bringing the film to life.

Even while his father, Bill Jackson, was dying, Byron said in the film, he was compelled to keep taking footage, though he didn’t know why. It was a sort of therapy to help him come to terms with the quick and fatal reality that was the pancreatic cancer that ultimately took his father’s life. Ultimately, the family was too close to the story to see the powerful messages contained in the footage. Said Gayle of the years of footage and how she reacted when presented with the idea of the documentary,

“God puts you in touch with who you need. I say it was spiritual. He [Byron] got put in touch with Kip and Kern [Konwiser], and they were able to take what Byron had and put it in such a way to present this story. There was a void of positive black role models, all these guys [in Team Jackson] didn’t have fathers in their lives and Bill was the father figure. It all got put together in to what you see [in the film], and it’s a message now. It’s bigger than you can ever imagine.”

The very fact that the tidbits of their lives came together to form such a cohesive, powerful story—about a father’s love for his family and a shared passion to fulfill a dream—was more than just the talent of the filmmakers, in Mrs. Jackson’s mind.

“Sometimes you don’t always know what you want to do with your life, but, if you have faith and believe and line yourself up and do what God says you’re supposed to do, then he’ll order your steps. I really believe that this project was almost predestined. Somehow, it’s like Bill knew. He’s not here anymore so he made all of these predictions. We thought he was crazy. We thought he was out of his mind. We didn’t know but he knew. It took his passing to figure it out.”

In telling its compelling tale, the film shows another side of DeSean Jackson than we’ve seen previously. Any good documentary explores and uncovers different sides of its subjects, and “A Father’s Dream” is no different. But what does it feel like to see her son exposed in such a different light, contrary to what many perceive of the confident NFL star?

I think it will clear up some of those misconceptions…When I hear those comments, I think, We know the truth. A lot of those things that people say, like he’s cocky, he’s this, he’s that—they don’t know the real DeSean. And if you knew the real DeSean you wouldn’t say those things. So I have to kind of dismiss it, turn my ear to it and turn a blind eye to it, because we know the truth. This kid has the biggest heart. If he could help everyone in the whole wide world he would do it.

“The Making of a Father’s Dream” is now available and can be seen on inDemand, Comcast, Verizon Fios, and other cable systems around the country. Please check your local listings for details.

Snoop Dogg Lion held his annual youth football camp at Crenshaw High in LA on Saturday, June 15, 2013. The event featured several LA area football icons. On hand were former USC coach and current Seattle Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll. His Seahawks players, Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman. The Snoop Youth Football League is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded to provide the opportunity for inner-city children to participate in youth football and cheer. The SYFL serves children between the ages of five and thirteen, teaching them the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, discipline, and self-respect, while also stressing the importance of academics.

HISTORY

The Snoop Youth Football League was founded by entertainment icon, Snoop Dogg. The fall of 2005 was the inaugural season of the SYFL, and there were over 1,300 kids in the Los Angeles area that participated. The season began in September and included seven regular season games and a three week playoff, concluding with the “Super Bowl,” at the end of November. SYFL all-star teams were chosen and participants traveled to Houston, TX. In fact, each year an all-star team is selected to travel to another city to compete with children in other football leagues. In addition, this provided opportunities for many children to ride on an airplane, travel to states that they never dreamed of going, and play in the most prestigious stadiums in the United States.

SYFL OBJECTIVE

The objective of the SYFL is to provide youth, regardless of race, color, creed, or economic background the chance to learn the values of character, integrity, discipline, and team work through football and cheer; to bring all other communities together through a common interest in sports; to promote fair play and fellowship; to teach the game elements promoting safety, enjoyment, and healthy competition.

BOWIE, MD – The Wounded Warrior Amputee softball team defeated the NFL Stars team 21-5 Saturday in the first annual NFL Players Celebrity Softball game. More importantly, each side successfully helped promote amputee awareness through the event’s sponsor Medical Center Orthotics and Prosthetics.
Medical Center Orthotics and Prosthetics is the exclusive provider of lower limb prosthetics at Walter Reed Medical Center to wounded soldiers coming back from Afghanistan and the Middle East. Known for the fit and function they provide to their patients – they make it possible for athletes like those on the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team to compete.

“I had a lot of fun,” said Washington Redskins’ cornerback E.J. Biggers. “Came out here and gave the community something — had a great game with the Wounded Warriors championship team. And they showed us why they’re champs today.”

The Wounded Warrior Amputee team did a lot of damage offensively. One player who stood out was U.S. Army’s Nicholas Scarborough, who seemingly hit home runs every time he stepped to the plate. The NFL Players started to form a comeback attempt in the bottom of the fourth inning, but it just wasn’t enough.

“We came out here to compete,” E.J. Biggers said. “We knew we weren’t going to win. But we came out here to compete and have fun — that was the big thing — have fun. And that’s what we all did.”

On the player’s team, Baltimore Ravens receiver Torrey Smith accounted for two of the player’s five points — one of which being a home run. Redskins’ Joshua Morgan and New York Jets’ Bret Lockett each had home runs as well.

“It was fun,” said Super Bowl champion Torrey Smith. “It’s always nice to have home runs in charity games. We had a great time — out here raising money for an amazing cause — wounded warriors and the soldiers that protect us. So, anytime you have an opportunity to support them, you do it without hesitation because they have given the ultimate sacrifice to us.”

Torrey Smith also rocked a new haircut at the event. “Chopped it off, man — just a change, you know,” Smith said. “It’s not really new — not like I’ve never had a haircut, but just a little change.”

The full NFL Players roster included: Desean Jackson (Philadelphia Eagles), Torrey Smith (Ravens), Bret Lockett (New York Jets), Robert Bailey (Cowboys, Ravens), Terrence Austin (Detroit Lions), Marvin Austin (New York Giants), Tavon Wilson (New England Patriots), Arrilious Benn (Eagles), EJ Biggers (Redskins), and Josh Morgan (Redskins).

Amputee2

The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) mission is to raise awareness, through exhibition and celebrity softball games, of the sacrifices and resilience of our military, and highlight their ability to rise above any challenge. Our goal is to show other amputees and the general population, that these athletes through extensive rehabilitation and training are able to express their desires and perform the sport they loved.

The WWAST is comprised of young, competitive, athletic veterans and active duty soldiers who have lost limbs post-9/11, while serving their country in the military/war. The team includes individuals with a variety of amputations of the arm, above knee, below knee, bilateral below knee, and foot. Some are still in the service, others are attending college thanks to the Post-9/11 GI Bill while others have moved on to new careers.

Your Eagletarian swung by the Eagles’ Youth Partnership’s 17th playground build this morning, at the William D. Kelley School on North 28th Street. Planning to head back in a few hours, when players and coaches are scheduled to be there. This is a bigger space to spruce up than most of the builds I’ve covered over the years; Eagles Youth Partnership Executive Director Sarah Helfman-Martinez said that for the first time, the organization will be installing two turf play fields, instead of one.

The build is a really cool thing the Eagles do, that reflects about 6 months of work behind the scenes. “It’s really grown so much,” Helfman-Martinez said.

This year’s project is particularly on point, in that because of the closing of a nearby school, Kelley and its play facilities will absorb about 150 more students this fall, Helfman-Martinez said.
