Desean and Tom Graves

We ask that you will join us in a prayer circle for Tom Seagraves.

Mrs. Dawn Seagraves released a public statement today advising that her husband, Tom, is scheduled for surgery, a distral panceatectomy and spleanectomy, on Monday, at Fox Chase. “Its a major surgery, per Mrs. Seagraves, so please continue to keep our family in your prayers and thoughts.”

DeSean and I understand and respect the Seagraves’ battle. We lost DeSean’s father, William Jackson, to pancreatic cancer in 2009 after only 5 months of treatment. Tom Seagraves was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in August 2012; and, continues to fight and raise awareness to Pancreatic Cancer on a daily basis. Tom, Dawn and their children have done so much to raise awareness to this disease; and, empathy and compassion for both those afflicted with Pancreatic Cancer and their loved ones.

“Just looking at him [Tom Seagraves] is really inspiring, because I can see him fighting. I can see that same look my dad had,” DeSean said to a local ABC news reporter recently. “Tom keeps me focused on what is important in life; and, to strive to make a difference in the lives touched by this dreadful disease and other catastrophic life experiences. Many of those afflicted may not have the resources to endure that the NFL or Philadelphia Eagles provided for my family and for that I am truly grateful and obligated to ‘give back’.”

DeSean and I ask that all of our friends, fans, family and Desean’s 500,000+ Twitter fans join us in a prayer circle for Tom Seagraves and his family.

Thank you.

– Gayle Jackson, President, The DeSean Jackson Foundation

IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced for Wienerschnitzel founder John Galardi, who died Saturday.

A press release issued by the Irvine-based Galardi Group says the fast food entrepreneur passed away at the age of 75. He had pancreatic cancer.

Founded by Galardi in 1961, Der Wienerschnitzel began as a single hot dog stand. At the time of its creation, Galardi was only 23.

Currently, the fast food giant sells more than 120 million hot dogs each year, according to the statement.

Dennis Tase, president and COO of the Galardi Group, described Galardi as a “true pioneer in the restaurant industry.”

“Since it all began in 1961, he has touched countless lives through his generosity as a business leader and his legacy will forever live on,” he said.

“Galardi built a brand representative of a time when life was simpler, a brand that holds a special place in the hearts of so many families in America. He will be deeply missed,” Tase added.

Galardi has a wife and four children.

Eagles DeSean Jackson’s game-winning punt return vs. Giants voted NFL’s ‘Greatest Play Ever’

Dubbed “Miracle at the Meadowlands No.2″, DeSean Jackson’s amazing punt return vs. the New York Giants in 2010 has been voted the “Greatest Play of All Time” by NFL.com

Jackson’s 65 yard game winning punt return- with no time left on the clock- beat out a Steve Young touchdown run vs. the Minnesota Vikings. Jackson’s punt return won by close to 16 million votes (58,635,836 to 42,853,011). The winner was decided by a fan vote.

The voting has been going on for close to a month and started with 64 plays. Jackson’s punt return beat out a Michael Vick touchdown run, a hail mary by Billy ‘White Shoes’ Johnson, a touchdown run by Barry Sanders, ‘The Catch’, and a Troy Polamalu flying tackle.

Jackson’s famous touchdown came on December 19th with just 12 seconds left, capping off a 21-point comeback by the Eagles. After fumbling the punt initially, Jackson took off and went almost untouched on his way to the end zone. Tom Coughlin told Matt Dodge to not punt the ball to Jackson, but the punter was unable to do so.

At the time, the win was viewed as the start of something special for the Eagles. Things did not workout that way, however, as they lost in the first round of the playoffs that year. It was a devastating loss for the Giants as it kept them out of the playoffs.

Stand Up To Cancer, St. Baldrick’s Foundation Award $14.5 Million for Childhood Cancer Research

Stand Up To Cancer and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation have announced a four-year, $14.5 million grant to create a “Dream Team” dedicated to childhood cancer research.

The grant will support efforts to bring together researchers from two disciplines of translational pediatric cancer research — genomics and immunotherapeutics — that historically have functioned independently of each other. With support from SU2C’s scientific partner, the American Association for Cancer search, the Immunogenomics to Create New Therapies for High-Risk Childhood Cancers initiative will seek to combine recent advances in understanding the genetic basis of certain aggressive childhood cancers with efforts to harness the body’s own defenses against cancer. Institutions participating in the initiative include Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the National Cancer Institute, the British Columbia Cancer Agency, Baylor College of Medicine, the Hospital for Sick Children, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and the University of Wisconsin.

Led by John M. Maris, director of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the research team will create a multi-institutional computing infrastructure to analyze which molecules are found on the surface of cancer cells but not normal cells, then develop new immunotherapeutic drugs and approaches in collaboration with the NCI’s Frederick National Laboratory and industry partners. The project is scheduled to begin this July, with the first clinical trials starting within a year.

“This Dream Team united top-tier researchers across North America in a multidimensional campaign that uses the best of basic science to create new therapeutics, while at the same time initiating multiple cutting-edge clinical trials of immunotherapy for deadly pediatric cancers,” said Crystal L. Mackall, chief of the NCI’s pediatric oncology branch and co-leader of the project. “We are confident that this combined approach will lead to novel therapies that will improve outcomes for some of the most lethal childhood cancers.”

“Stand Up To Cancer and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Announce New Pediatric Cancer Dream Team.” Stand Up to Cancer Press Release 4/07/13.
