DeSean Jackson Hosts Free Football Camp In Long Beach

July 11, 2019, Long Beach, CA,  By,  Mike Guardabascio, The 562.Org

As usual, Long Beach was host to an NFL player putting on a free summer football camp for local youth last weekend. That’s become regular in Long Beach, where the kids have had plenty of opportunity to hear from local guys made good over the past several years. What was unusual was the NFLer at the center of the hundreds of eager young campers: Long Beach Poly alum DeSean Jackson, of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The camp at Veterans Memorial Stadium was the first free offering Jackson has put on in Long Beach, and he said it was an emotional homecoming for him putting the event on at Vets.

“It’s always a pleasure to be back in Long Beach where I started my career and legacy,” he said. “A lot of familiar faces come out and support, guys I played with, coaches. It’s really an honor to have them here, you don’t get to see all of them a lot.”

Jackson has put on several camps over the years, but not in the city where he first made his name.

“I’ve always taken pride in putting on events like this to have the people who helped me get to this point in my career give these kids the principles that made me who I am,” said Jackson. “I want to give back to these kids out here today, it’s a blessing to have the opportunity to put this camp on. These kids area  huge inspiration to me in my life on a daily basis.”

Poly coach Stephen Barbee was on hand as a volunteer, and was happy to see Jackson inspiring the local kids. Barbee also pointed out that Jackson showed up to the Edison Battle at the Beach the previous weekend to cheer on Poly as the young Jackrabbits made a semifinal run before falling to Mater Dei in a single-possession game.

“DeSean Jackson is such a great representative of our team, and it means a lot to them to see him support them,” said Barbee.

“Long Beach Poly has a special place in my heart going back to 2001 as a young kid,” said Jackson. “I just want to motivate the guys and support them any way possible, Long Beach Poly is the home of the greats–I want them to know I see them and we’re all cheering for them.”

There’s been plenty for Poly fans to cheer about when it comes to Jackson. He’s often repped his high school more publicly than his college, sometimes saying “DeSean Jackson, Long Beach Poly” during television introductions instead of shouting out Cal, where he played NCAA ball. Jackson is back with the Eagles this season as he enters his 12th season in the NFL, a decorated career that’s seen him haul in 589 passes for over 10,000 yards, as well as three Pro Bowl honors. Jackson now stands at No. 45 all-time in the NFL in terms of receiving yards and is fifth in receiving yards by current players.

Barbee wasn’t the only local volunteer to work the camp with Jackson–the sidelines were stuffed with familiar faces including current Poly players and recent alums. Fellow Poly to the NFLers like Terrance Austin, Samie Parker, and Travon Patterson served as volunteers, as did Jackson’s speed trainer Gary Cablayan, who also works with John Ross.

Gayle Jackson, President and Co-Founder, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation, stressed the importance of having this inaugural event in Long Beach in regards to her late husband’s legacy; and, Long Beach is where Bill’s vision for transitioning the youth in South Central L.A. beyond their borders through sports began.

We are privileged to have the resources, donors and community partners to provide a free camp for 350 youth, from extremely diverse segments of Los Angeles County.  We are also honored to have a $1,500.00 grant from the NFL Foundation to help defray some of the costs of associated with the planning and execution of a monumental event of this magnitude.

NFL player, DeSean Jackson, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, in March 2019, gave back to Philadelphia, on Saturday, June 8th, when he hosted a free camp for 250 youth, in North Philadelphia, in partnership with the Blackhawks Athletic Club.  Jackson told NBC sports reporter, John Clark, that he is “very blessed and fortunate to be back in Philadelphia.”  “I feel it’s my responsibility to give back,” he stated, “This is about helping the community and inspiring our youth to strive for greatness.”

The Blackhawks Athletic Club opened the registration to its members and other youth organizations in the Philadelphia area.  Each age group of youth had the opportunity to work out with DeSean’s personal, professional coaches from LA, local youth coaches, who showed them the ‘tricks of the trade’ gained from years of experience; and, the latest technology in developing elite technical and performance skills.

For Gayle Jackson, the level of adulation DeSean has received since returning to Philly; and, reflecting on the terms and conditions of his departure, means that his foundation should “give back” much more.  “We’re back, in Philly now and we’re getting all this love”, she said.  “If you’re getting all this love, you have to do something, and that something should be the best that you can give.”  That is what the DeSean Jackson Foundation is about:  Mentoring, empowering and building confidence in these young kids, Gayle Jackson said, “To me, that can change a person’s life.”

PRESS RELEASE

##

DeSean Jackson, CEO, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation and a Washington Redskins’ wide receiver; and, his mother, Gayle, President, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation made an in-kind donation of brand, new books to the 92nd Street Elementary School, Los Angeles, CA (Watts), as part of their foundation’s holiday giving program.

##

Dr. Priscilla Currie, Principal, at 92nd Street Elementary, Los Angeles, graciously accepted the donation for the school library on behalf of her students who were in dire need of current, age appropriate, ethnically diverse reading materials.

Gayle Jackson states that it was extremely important to my son, DeSean, that our foundation enhance our programs and services to include a component to promote literacy so we made several book donations to school in the Washington Redskins’ franchise market this year; and, he desired to also select a school in Los Angeles to be the recipient of a holiday giving book donation; and, 92nd Street Elementary, in Watts, was chosen. The school is one of several schools that Gayle Jackson tours during the football off-season with NFL Moms and the Read Across America program. The books were received prior to the holiday break because DeSean said it was imperative to encourage students to read with their entire family during the break from school; stay out of trouble; and, exercise your body and mind.

Needs Assessment:
In America’s public high schools, 45% of black students and 43% of Hispanics (as compared to 22% of whites) drop out before their classes graduate. Dropout rates are especially high in urban areas with large minority populations, including such academic basket cases as the District of Columbia (57%), Trenton (59%), Camden (61.4%), Baltimore (65.4%), Cleveland (65.9%), and Detroit (75.1%).

Of those black and Hispanic students who do manage to earn a diploma, a large percentage are functionally illiterate. Black high-school graduates perform, on average, at a level that is four academic years below that of their white counterparts. Of all graduates in the class of 2011, only 11% of blacks and 15% of Hispanics were proficient in math, as compared to 42% of whites. Similarly, just 13% of blacks and 4% of Hispanics were proficient in reading, versus 40% of whites. As political science professor Lydia Segal notes in her book, Battling Corruption in America’s Public Schools: “It is in cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Philadelphia where the largest numbers of children cannot read, write, and compute at acceptable levels and where racial gaps between whites and blacks and Latinos are widest. It is in large cities that minority boys in particular, trapped in poor schools, have the greatest chance of flunking out and getting sucked into the downward spiral of crime and prison.”

Dear Mrs. Jackson,

I would like to take the opportunity to thank you and DeSean for your generous donation. What greater gift than to put books in the hands of children? You donation is greatly appreciated and needed.

Heartfelt thanks,

Priscilla Currie

##
Each youth will be given a $100 Wal-Mart gift card for a personal shopping trip with DeSean Jackson and several Washington Redskins’ players. Jackson and his teammates will mentor the youth during the shopping trip on life skills, financial literary and, “Be the Change that You want to See in the World”. Jackson states that he enjoys seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces when they get their own $100 Wal-Mart gift card; then, the reality check when they have to budget by learning a ‘life lesson’ of how important it is to keep your “paper straight”, it’s not all about ‘the Benjamin’s’ and bling bling lifestyle of a professional athlete.
##
Gayle Jackson, DeSean Jackson Foundation president, states it is easy for the NFL players who volunteer their time for this event to make reach these children in a manner that no one can in a life-changing experience. We have been privileged to be affiliated with awesome NFL franchises that have supported our foundation and given us the platform to sustain and grow. We are humbled and blessed.
##
The Wal-Mart Foundation provided a $2,500 grant to the DeSean Jackson Foundation for the purchase of twenty-five (25) $100 gift cards for the event. DeSean Jackson, states that in the past the gift cards and shopping for the additional 25 youth was raised through monetary donations from the NFL players who participated in the event, Jackson and the DeSean Jackson Foundation.
##
Jackson hopes that his fans and sponsors will continue to support the event this year by making donations of Wal-Mart gift cards to match the Wal-Mart grant in various amounts either by forwarding to DeSean at the Washington Redskins or bringing directly the event where an authorized DeSean Jackson Foundation representative will be present.
##
The Wal-Mart store will be open to the public during the “Shop for the Jock” event to do their holiday shopping while the event is being held so we encourage Washington Redskins’ fans and media to come support DeSean Jackson and his fellow Washington Redskins’ players while they donate their time to give back to the community while impacting the lives of vulnerable children and families in our community.

Gayle is very excited about the opportunity to inspire the youth in the Jackson’s new NFL franchise market, the Washington Redskins, to Read, Dream and Achieve.  She read from DeSean’s book, “No Bullies in the Huddle”; and, a book by her cousin, an author of children’s book,”My Brother Who Taught Me to Fly”.

During the event, Gayle Jackson, donated 120 brand, new books for the school library, from the DeSean Jackson; and, a Frank Murphy, a fan of DeSean’s, who reached out to Gayle Jackson after he learned of their literacy initiative and wanted to pay forward the kindness DeSean extended to him over seven years ago when he played in a basket ball game which DeSean was a celebrity baller.

##

Frank said DeSean was kind, humble and kept passing the ball to him; and, made him feel good. Frank, who is a children’s author, donated 50 new books to the school in DeSean’s name. Mrs. Jackson says, “We are often asked how we can do so much with so little; and, continue to get up when constantly being knocked down. DeSean Jackson is the CEO and Co-Founder, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation, which was founded in 2009, after his father, William “Bill” Jackson, died from Pancreatic Cancer when DeSean was a rookie with the Philadelphia Eagles. November is World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month; and, Jackson chose to honor his father’s legacy by appearing at Roberto Clemente, promoting literacy; and, donating new books to the school library in Bill’s memory.

“My dad instilled the importance and value that literacy would be in my life”, states Jackson. “When I was five, my Pops knew that I was going to be drafted into the NFL even though I looked like a 45# tee-ball player. He taught me that I should develop my skills on and off the field in regards to building my brand, negotiating contracts, understanding playbooks from every perspective; and, financial literacy.

##

Pops grew up in Pittsburgh, an avid Steeler fan, who studied the game. He lectured me constantly on issues such as collective bargaining, free agency; and, what how the NFL lockout with replacement players changed the dynamics of the league. I was a little dude but in my Pop’s eyes I was a big man. I hope to instill the same values and the importance and love of reading to youth who will listen. Pops was also a big Roberto Clemente, a Pittsburgh Pirate and humanitarian. Therefore, being at Roberto Clemente and honoring both Roberto Clemente and my dad is awesome.”

DeSean Jackson, of the Washington Redskins, took time out from his hectic schedule to participate in a national literacy initiative, National American Education Week, by visiting the students at Trailside Middle School, Ashburn, VA; and, delivering a powerful message of empowerment.

Reading Month

Gayle Jackson, President, of the DeSean Jackson, states that our nation is facing an epidemic crisis in regards to the fact that millions of American children get to 4th grade without learning to read proficiently and that puts them on the high school drop out track; and, in the most severe cases a “pipeline to prison”.

“Trends in the nation’s demographic composition reinforces both the challenges and the necessity for children from low-income families and children of color to read so they can succeed and graduate from school; become contributing members of society; and, in some cases break the cycle of inter-generational poverty.

I can research theories and best practices from the Annie Casey Foundation and Dr. Marion Wright Edelman, of the Children’s Defense Fund, and be well informed; but, at the end of the day I cannot reach or make an impact on the lives of the youth and their families that my son, DeSean, does. DJACC makes reading a ‘cool’ thing to do”, says Gayle Jackson.

DeSean Jackson also took the opportunity to deliver his compelling anti-bullying message to the students by having an open dialogue; and, reading from the latest edition of his book, “No Bullies in the Huddle”, which is a collaboration with Dr. William T. Hoston. [The book is available on Amazon.com.]
