By Michelle E. Shaw

To the students, faculty and staff of Milton High School, offensive line coach Mike Scott was a big deal.

Scott had a big presence, a big voice and a big heart. For those reasons, and others, the football coach was affectionately called Big Show.

“You just had to see the way he interacted with everybody,” said Gary Sylvestri, Milton athletic director. “You just knew he cared about them and wanted the best for them. You can’t help but love a guy like that.”

In October, Michael Thomas Scott of Canton was diagnosed with stage IV adenocarcinoma, a cancer that began in his pancreas and spread to his liver and lungs. He was given six to eight months to live. Scott, 36, died Saturday.

The Scott family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeside Funeral Home in Woodstock, which is in charge of arrangements. The funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at the Woodstock First Baptist Church, with burial at 4 p.m. at Oak Knoll Memorial Gardens, Rome.

Born in Hamilton, Ohio, four days before Christmas, Scott played football at the University of Kentucky, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1998. He later earned a master’s in education from North Georgia College and State University in 2010. Scott played offensive line for Kentucky, but was sidelined by his health in his third year, said Todd Perry, who coached the offensive line with Scott at Milton.

“We just missed each other at Kentucky, but we knew of each other because we both played offensive line,” said Perry, who left Kentucky the year before Scott arrived. “But when he couldn’t play anymore, that opened the door to coaching for him.”

Scott’s coaching career started at Kentucky, where he was a student coach, and included stops at Trinity University in Texas, the University of Central Florida, the University of West Georgia, Southeastern Louisiana University, and the University of West Alabama.

“Every coach should want a Mike Scott on their team,” said Howie DeCristofaro, Milton head football coach.

“He was a big, strong guy who’d be in there lifting weights with the kids, bench pressing 365 (pounds) and showing them how easy it was, and they’re looking at him like, ‘Jeez, when do I get to do that?’ But he was always doing something for the kids, with the kids, and not just the ones he coached, but the ones he might coach and the ones he’d never coach,” DeCristofaro said.

For Scott, his work on and off the football field was more than just sports. He was dispensing life lessons, Perry said.

“Don’t get me wrong,” he said. “Mike was a great football coach. But he was an even better teacher.”

Scott is survived by his wife of nearly 8 years, Mary Jane Bray Scott; daughter, Abigail “Abby” Scott; and son, Anthony Michael Scott, all of Canton; father, Waller Massie Scott Jr. of West Chester, Ohio; and sister, Debbie Scott Harrison of Nicholasville, Ky.

    • Community mourns loss of Milton HS assistant COACH Michael Scott

A beloved Milton High School assistant football coach lost his fight with pancreatic cancer over the weekend. Michael Scott died Saturday night of stage four pancreatic cancer.

“I had the honor of holding his hand and telling him that I loved him as he drew his last breath on Earth,” Scott’s wife wrote on Facebook.

Scott was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer in September after going to the doctor for acid reflux.  He was just 36 years old, and he’s survived by his wife and two small children.

Members of the community have come together to help the Scott family in wake of his tragic death.

Doug Robbins, a friend of Scott’s, is using his Christmas tree business to raise money.

“Hopefully we can raise enough money to at least be able to pay off the house, which would take a lot of stress off the family’s back and help the two little children that they do have,” said Robbins.

Signs were posted Monday at Milton High School informing students of Scott’s passing.

“All of our teachers were letting people just leave class to go to the guidance counselor,” said Luke Holmes, a student at the school.

Students at the school said it was a hard day.

“There was a lot of tests and quizzes today and in honor of Coach Scott, they moved them to later in the week,” said Tyler Roquemore.

For the last two months, the school and students have also raised money for the Scott family.

Milton High senior Sami Holmes decided to buy their family Christmas tree at Robbins’ business to support the family.

“It has to be tough on his wife, handling two kids and she’s on her own now. She was really strong through the whole thing. We just wanted to help her out, come here and help Coach Scott in general,” said Holmes,

Visitation for Scott will take place on Wednesday evening at Lakeside Funeral Home in Woodstock. His funeral will be at First Baptist of Woodstock on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donation be made to http://www.giveforward.com/miracleformike. An account has also been set up at Cherokee Bank in Canton, Ga. Checks can be made payable to “Scott Strong Fund.”

SJ Magazine
Tackling Cancer      Gayle Jackson and her son – Philadelphia Eagle DeSean Jackson – turn their tragedy into hope for others

By Marianne Aleardi

Gayle Jackson

Two years ago, Philadelphia Eagle DeSean Jackson’s father, Bill Jackson, lost his short battle with pancreatic cancer. It was a devastating blow to a family just beginning to see their son’s success in the NFL. DeSean and his mom, Gayle, have now started the DeSean Jackson Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer to raise money and awareness of a disease they say is too often a death sentence. Gayle Jackson spoke to us about the foundation and the reasons she wants to help those diagnosed with the disease.

When did you first suspect something was wrong with Bill?   In hindsight, he probably was sick for years, and we didn’t know. About five years before his diagnosis, he started slowing down. But he was getting older, so it wasn’t a red flag. He would lose his voice a lot, and every now and then he would say, “Man, look at my feet.” And they were swollen like elephant feet. The doctor said he was diabetic. Diabetes is the inability of your pancreas to process your blood sugar. I think that was an early sign of his cancer. The doctors can’t say I’m right, but they can’t say I’m wrong either.

In terms of really noticing something was wrong, it was a span of five months from when we said, “Hey, you should probably go to the doctor” to when he passed. He kept complaining about his stomach; he made it seem like it was indigestion. He loved to eat – that was one of his fun things to do – and he wasn’t getting any satisfaction from eating. He kept saying, “That didn’t taste good.” Or, “Man, my stomach.” He started sleeping a lot, and then almost overnight we noticed that he had this dramatic weight loss.

Did your husband get to see DeSean’s success in the NFL?   He did. He was able to see DeSean’s first year with the Eagles. We found out Bill was sick during the playoffs, during the Eagles-Giants run two years ago. It was a blessing for him to see that first year. He had worked so tirelessly to get DeSean to the NFL; he believed when other people didn’t. He would say, “My boy’s going to win the Heisman Trophy. My boy’s going to do this. My boy…my boy…my boy.” People would look at DeSean and say, “Yeah, right.” People thought he was out of his mind. And then DeSean kept achieving and they thought, okay, maybe this crazy man isn’t so crazy after all.
What made you start the foundation?    The idea came from the experience. It happens so fast and it happens so quickly, you don’t have time to evaluate your emotions. You’re doing everything you can to cope and react to what your circumstances are. But after, you realize you just can’t walk away. You can’t act like it didn’t happen. So what do you do? We had to do something. This was our attempt to make a difference and help anyone who might be going through that experience. The foundation gives us something hopeful and positive to focus on. It’s a great way to honor Bill’s memory.

What was the experience like?        Sometimes you go through experiences, and you’re never the same. We struggled as a family. With this disease, you see your loved one literally in one physical shape one day, you go home that night, come back in the morning and see a significant change for the worse. It was a day-to-day battle.   Many times, we would go to the hospital and once they realized he was terminal, once they realized the diagnosis was pancreatic cancer – which has a survival rate of 5 percent – they don’t want to treat you, they kick you out. But you’re so sick. You require care, 24 hour-care, because you have so many medical problems. Any lay person trying to deal with that at home – you can’t do it. It’s too much. You require assistance. You need round-the-clock medical care. But who can afford that? Every day, he was deteriorating. So as time went on, we would leave the hospital, and 12 hours later we’d be taking him back to the ER. They would look at him, determine it was pancreatic cancer and kick us out again. They said he should go into a nursing home, but he was still young and vibrant – that wasn’t even an option. He kept getting so sick, and they kept sending him home. It was just a mess. Luckily, we had DeSean to help. But everybody doesn’t have a DeSean to help.

DeSean Jackson with his mother and late father

How was DeSean able to help?  DeSean reached out to his doctors in Philadelphia, and they said, “If you can get him to us, we’ll take good care of him.” We were in LA, and we needed to get him to Philly.  But we couldn’t put him on a commercial plane, because he was so sick. We needed a medical airplane, which costs a lot of money. It just so happened that DeSean had just been signed by the Eagles and he had a signing bonus. We used his signing bonus to pay for the plane.
What do you hope the foundation will do? I want to raise enough funds – because everything takes money – to enable the doctors to figure this out and find a cure. We need to do that now, so we can turn around the survival rate. Pancreatic cancer is almost like a death sentence. There’s no method for detection, and there are few treatments.

This whole process is evolving. It’s writing its own script. I cannot really tell you I have a formula because I’ve never been down this road. I can just tell you the goal is to find a cure and the sooner we find it, the better, because this is a road no one wants to walk down. The odds aren’t good, but we’re trying to change that. We’re trying to change the numbers.

Do you have other goals for the foundation?   A long-term goal I have – but this is very long-term – is for a dedicated rehab facility for people with this diagnosis. This was one of the first challenges we faced after the initial diagnosis. Bill was still well enough to get up and move around, but he couldn’t get rehab. He was a young 60-year-old. He was in great shape, very athletic. He would swim, run track. He was very vivacious. He would even have a catch with the football with DeSean in the hospital. But he had no options for rehabilitation. He wasn’t even a candidate. They said he wasn’t healthy enough. Who determines that? I’d like to see these patients have a place where they can get rehab.

How do you raise money?   We have a campaign on the website – 10, 10, 10. Take ten minutes to learn about pancreatic cancer. Tell ten friends. Donate ten dollars. That’s ongoing. We also have an annual gala in Philadelphia, and many Eagles players attend. It’s a wonderful event that brings together many people who support our cause.

The foundation is still in the set-up stage. We’re trying to get everything up and running. It takes time to get established. It’s a huge undertaking. And we’ve been doing all this while DeSean is new to the NFL. A lot has been happening, so it’s all taking time. It’s a process.

Are you planning any other special events?   We had a Health and Family Resource Fair focusing on pancreatic cancer when we went home to Long Beach, Calif. DeSean went to high school there. We worked with officials from the City of Long Beach, the police department, library, Boys and Girls Club, and the American Cancer Society, just to name a few. We set up in the park, and we had a doctor who specializes in pancreatic cancer come out for a Q & A session. DeSean came to be with the kids. It was informative and a great day. I hope we can do that every year. This was a start – we got the word out. That could be something we can take around the country.

What would you like to tell families whose loved one has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer?   Be as informed as you can be. Know there are resources out there – not many – but they are out there. You need a specialist; you can’t go to a regular doctor. Find a specialist in a special treatment facility. Keep pushing. Rely on your strength and your faith. Reach out to someone who has been down that road before, and keep hope. No matter what people tell you – because it won’t be positive – don’t give in.

In DeSean’s WordsEagles receiver DeSean Jackson spoke of his father during a telethon to raise funds for cancer research: “My dad was a very amazing man. To have a father figure like that in my life, doing everything to help me be successful, you couldn’t get better than that. When I first found out he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, it was one of the worst days of my life. He was tough. He never gave up on himself. I can remember talking to him after some of the games. And even though he was going through what he was going through, still, you could tell he was happy for his son. Pop fought hard until he could really fight no more.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AN OPEN LETTER TO MARY JANE SCOTT, WIFE OF COACH MIKE SCOTT, FROM THE DESEAN JACKSON FOUNDATION FOR PANCREATIC CANCER

DeSean Jackson, of the Philadelphia Eagles, and Gayle Jackson, President, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer extend their deepest sympathies to the family, friends and high school athletes who’s lives have been devastated by the passing of Coach Mike Scott, a high school football coach, in Milton, GA, last night.  DeSean Jackson states, “This is personal” and we have to work hard to raise funds for research to eradicate Pancreatic Cancer.  Jackson lost his beloved father, William Jackson, to Pancreatic Cancer in 2009 which fuels his passion for his foundation.

***********************************************************************************************

Subject: Comforting Thoughts…

Dear Mary Jane,
Our deepest and warmest sympathies are extended to you, your precious babies, extended family; and, all who were touched by Coach Mike’s life. Your husband suffered greatly with this disease and the predictable outcome now is the inevitable. Knowing that God has allowed him to enter into sweet and eternal rest must be a source of your strength and comfort. You will see him again praise God!
Praise our Lord and Savior in a loud voice during difficult times. He will hear your cry, soothe your heart and ease your pain. You will and can make it through! The days ahead will receive a confirmation of  just how much those young athletes you mentioned in our conversation, were touched, mentored and blessed by Coach Mike Scott’s teachings. Again, another source of strength to uplift your spirit and fuel your desire to continue on this journey.
The Bible teaches us that our life is not our own and we are to be a blessing to others. From what I understand, Coach Scott definitely fulfilled that mission over and above his calling. Once again, a channel of inspiration, energy and another opportunity for you to be proud of who your husband is and he will live on through the seeds that he planted in so many others’ lives…congratulations!
Continue to replay in your mind and never let go of the happy and fun times you shared. Two beautiful children were created for you to enjoy for the rest of your life and two more reasons to say Thank you Lord!
With that being said, there is so much work to be done in the field of pancreatic cancer. There is no cure. It’s much too soon now to discuss but once things slow down and you collect your thoughts, let’s talk about an action plan to combat and fight it. We have to find a cure in this lifetime so that no one else has to go down this same path or take this dreaded journey.
Please remember that DeSean and I are just a phone call, text message or email away.
God bless you,  Mary Jane, and we are praying for comfort, strength, peace and rest is our prayer.

As we reported earlier Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend this morning, before driving to the teams facility and shooting himself in the head.

Jay Glazer broke the news this morning when he tweeted out that there had been a shooting at the Chiefs practice facility.

From there we were able to confirm via KCTV5 in Kansas City, that a Chiefs player had reportedly killed his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins in a home around 8 a.m. and then drove to the teams practice facility where he reportedly pulled the gun on himself, where he took his own life.

At that point, the football world and social media had been rocked on its heals.

Media scattered to locate the name of those involved.

News eventually surfaced that the player involved was Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher.

Belcher was a four-year veteran, and had started 44 games since 2009.

Reports have also surfaced that Belcher was confronted by team personnel to not to harm himself, before he took his own life.

Belcher and Perkins had their first child together about a month ago.

Reports are that the NFL has instructed the Chiefs opponent for Sunday, the Carolina Panthers to proceed with their travels.

Truly sad day for everyone involved.
