DeSean Jackson, CEO, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation, has teamed up with the Farm Bureau of Virginia to raise awareness and funds for research for Pediatric Cancer. DeSean Jackson and his mother, Gayle Jackson, are taking time out from their national campaign raising awareness to Pancreatic Cancer to lend their support to the Farm Bureau of Virginia that solicited their support to raise awareness and funds for research for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in memory of Tomas Musser (2001-2010) who loved football; and, NFL Philadelphia Eagles’ W.R. DeSean Jackson.

According to the American Cancer Society, childhood cancers are rare, making up less than 1% of all cancers diagnosed each year. About 11,630 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades. Because of the major treatment advances in recent decades more than 80% of children with cancer now survive 5 year or more.

DeSean Jackson commends St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital for the crucial role it plays in battling pediatric cancer and appeals to his fans to support for this extremely worthy cause. One Team, One Purpose!

PRESS RELEASE

November 24, 2013

Fenton Paw 2col

DeSean Jackson, of the Philadelphia Eagles, and his foundation, The DeSean Jackson Foundation, have teamed up with the Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School, in Fenton, Michigan to raise awareness to Pancreatic Cancer and advocate for research for funding and support for those diagnosed with this dreadful disease and their families.

DeSean Jackson and his mother, Gayle Jackson, founded The DeSean Jackson Foundation, in 2009 in memory of William “Bill” Jackson, DeSean’s father who died shortly after being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Jackson states, “I lost my hero, my best friend and my father to Pancreatic Cancer and I deal with that loss each and every day of my life; but, right now it’s not about me and family. It’s about AGS and these kids who reached across the league to me to help their voices be heard.”

In October 2013, the Jacksons were contacted by Jill Smigiel, a teacher at AGS, through Twitter on behalf of several student athletes who were adamant about the fact that Pancreatic Cancer receives less funding for research and less national attention than other cancers; and, the life expectancy is less than other cancers. The students wanted to encourage NFL players to wear Purple in November to raise awareness to Pancreatic Cancer as they did across the league in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness.

The students challenged DeSean Jackson to Stand Up for Pancreatic Cancer by being the first to wear purple socks during the month of November in the NFL. Mrs. Jackson advised the students that would not be possible. Then, students decided to advocate by wearing purple socks themselves in protest. Mrs. Jackson was so impressed by their solidarity and advocacy that she convinced her son, DeSean, to help AGS develop a national platform so their voices would be heard. Thus, the AGS “Purple Out” has been embraced by the administration, faculty and student population; and, Monday, November 25th the students will launch this historical, inaugural event.

DeSean Jackson commends AGS for helping their students develop a life-long pattern of advancing the common good of becoming successful, purposeful members of society with empathy and compassion for the less fortunate. Jackson requests that media attention be focused on AGS during the “Purple Out” and the real story about Pancreatic Cancer and its impact on our society will be heard in the voices of those who know it best. “It’s not about me today”, states Jackson, “it’s about AGS and the kids.”

Thank you to all our fans, friends and family who showed up and showed out at Lincoln Financial Field, on November 17th, when the Philadelphia Eagles was victorious over the Washington Redskins (16-24) and took first place in the NFC East. [To God, be the Glory!]

I am posting pictures of some of the celebrities who stopped by to support my son, DeSean, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Eagles’ Nation. I, however, would be remiss if I did not mention the thousands of fans at the Linc; and, our social network of fans around the world who support us every day. – Gayle Jackson, President, The DeSean Jackson Foundation.

DeSean Jackson Embraces Being An Entertainer

DeSean Jackson is a man of the people.

Whether it’s falling backwards into the end zone against the Dallas Cowboys, soaring in for six against Oakland, running around the goal line at the end of his Miracle at the New Meadowlands or showing Giants fans what he thinks of salsa dancing, Jackson knows how to get the fans talking.

The speedy receiver added to that list of memorable moments on Sunday. After two Packers defenders helped knock the ball up in the air, it fell down perfectly into Jackson’s hands. He then turned backwards and casually walked into the end zone for six.

“I just love to play this game,” said Jackson. “However it comes out to be, that’s what it is. I feel like I’m an entertainer in this sport that I’m in, and in my career I’ve done some crazy things. I just like to bring the entertainment to the fans. They pay their hard-earned money to come to the games and watch us, so I just want to give them a little extra to watch.”

On October 28-29, Leila Steinberg, CEO and Founder, of Alternative Intervention Models, a Los Angeles based public charity that has a unique business model that incorporates arts and athletic programs in its curriculum for at-risk youth, partnered with DeSean Jackson, of the Philadelphia Eagles, to launch Jackson’s first inaugural, Make Your Dream Youth Summit, in Philadelphia, PA, at the Boys’ Latin Charter School. The two-day event reached over 600 young men from diverse backgrounds; and, was deemed a success in challenging those in attendance to maximize their potential to be successful, contributing members of society; seek positive, male role models and be positive male role models; and, to embrace diversity, sensitivity and tolerance.

Leila Steinberg is an artist and community organizer who began working with youth twenty (20) years ago in the San Francisco Bay area. As the daughter of a criminal defense attorney of Polish-Jewish descent and mother who was an activist of Mexican-Turkish descent, she grew up surrounded by the workings of the justice system and took a front row seat to the personal tragedies and socio-economic pressures that turn so many at-risk youth in hardened felons. Steinberg is committed to helping people who fall through the cracks of society.

In 1985, she developed a series of specialized programs for youth within the juvenile justice system and those residing in residential treatment facilities. As hip-hop music became the expression of today’s youth, Steinberg began training artists to develop voices powerful enough to reach a generation. While conducting poetry workshops in Northern California, Steinberg met Tupuc Shakur; and, he become a regular participant in her class. Steinberg opened her home to Shakur where he read and wrote under her encouragement. Steinberg is credited with being Shakur’s mentor and first manager. She is frequently asked to be a consultant for any documentaries and articles about the superstar rapper, Tupac Shakur.

This past Monday and Tuesday I was blessed with to be the MC for The Make Your Dream Summit given by The DeSean Jackson Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer and touch the lives of hundreds of boys. These young boys were excited to talk and meet DeSean Jackson, his Mother Mrs. Gayle Jackson, and Leila Steinberg to share their dreams about life as they learned how DeSean accomplished his dreams with the help of his father, Bill Jackson and team of brothers. It was truly a blessing for these young men at Philadelphia Charter School Boy’s Latin and I am thankful to have been apart of it.

DeSean Jackson attended a screening of DeSean Jackson: The Making of a Father’s Dream and spoke with students directly following the film. DeSean Jackson, who has built a career on creating highlights, has lived much of his life in front of a camera. The by-product is a new documentary, DeSean Jackson: The Making of a Father’s Dream, compiled from thousands of hours of footage taken by his brother, Byron Jackson, since Jackson was a child. It is a story of his rise to fame from Pop Warner to Pro Bowl and tells the rocky journey of a family to stay together through it all, despite their differences, and in the face of mounting pressure from outside influences. It is a family story, wrapped in the fanfare of an NFL dream. The sentiment “it takes a Village to catch a break” is woven throughout-a sentiment that rings true with the Boys’ Latin community.
