The DeSean Jackson Foundation Annual Gala                                                    – Posted on July 12th, 2011 by ShutterBooth Philadelphia

We were thrilled to be a part of such a great cause when asked to participate in The DeSean Jackson Foundation Annual Gala held recently at Philadelphia’s Water Works.  Along with his mother, Gayle, DeSean started this foundation to “improve the quality of life for pancreatic cancer patients and their immediate family members who seek information and assistance during such a vulnerable time.”

Some other supporters who came out to show their support for this foundation included current Eagles’ players, like Mike Vick, Jason Avant, and Brent Celek, along with some former teammates, including Correll Buckhalter.  To learn more about this wonderful foundation, check out The DeSean Jackson  Foundation website.

Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews Teams Up With NFL Superstar Desean Jackson to promote Pancreatic Cancer Awareness* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, along with Desean Jackson, and his mother Gayle Jackson, are hosting a Free Family Health & Safety Resource Fair with a Focus on Pancreatic Cancer, Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave., Long Beach, California. Please join us for this free community event, which includes over ten different free health screenings provided by St. Mary Medical Center and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. In addition, there will be indoor presentations highlighting health & safety with good eating habits, and open discussion about pancreatic, breast, and colon cancer. “Many people tell me they want to look better, feel better, and live happier, more fulfilling lives. The only way to get there is by focusing on our health and safety”, said Councilman Dee Andrews.

Desean Jackson, a Polytechnic High School graduate who currently plays for the NFL Philadelphia Eagles, lost his father to pancreatic cancer two years ago and wants to assist in getting the word out this undetected disease. “It feels so wonderful to be able to come back to my hometown and give back. Our health is something that we sometimes take for granted and this event has the resources to get us back on track”, said Desean Jackson. Desean and his mother, Gayle, created Foundation 10 as a way to give back to the community. When asked why she was so passionate about creating this fair, Gayle said, “One of the conditions of pancreatic cancer is that most times you don’t know you have it until the disease is in its later stages”. In her husband’s case, like many others with this type of cancer, there were no red flags prior to the diagnosis.  As such, Desean established Foundation 10 and is co-hosting this event to ensure the public have the proper knowledge about pancreatic cancer and to raise enough money to find a cure.

The fair will also have free family activities such as games and face painting, with free healthy snacks provided by Whole Foods. Enjoy outdoor yoga, stress relieving activities, breathing techniques, and spoken word performances out on the main stage. Participating sponsors of the event include: St. Mary Medical Center, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach Fire Department, Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine, Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services, Long Beach Public Library, the Port of Long Beach, Healthy Active Long Beach, WSS, Warehouse Shoe Sales, The Boys & Girls Club of Long Beach, and the Peace Garden at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. This event is free and open to the public.  For more information call the Office of Councilman Dee Andrews at (562) 570-6816.
