DeSean Jackson, of LA Rams, looks up for a pass from QB Matthew Stafford during Saturday’s scrimmage with the Dallas Cowboys

By KEVIN MODESTI | kmodesti@scng.com | Los Angeles Daily News, PUBLISHED: August 7, 2021 at 9:35 p.m. | UPDATED: August 8, 2021 at 2:18 a.m., Repost by: J. Adams, DeSean Jackson Foundation , August 8, 2021, 7:14 a.m.

OXNARD — The first two passes were too long. The next one was too short and was broken up. Finally, on the last attempt at a deep throw from Matthew Stafford to DeSean Jackson, the Rams’ star off-season additions got it just right.

Stafford’s high-arching completion to DeSean Jackson, who’d out-sprinted defensive backs Trevon Diggs and Donovan Wilson up the right sideline, was a highlight of the Rams’ scrimmage against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday.

Given how much the Rams are depending on the new quarterback’s arm and the new wide receiver’s speed to loosen up defenses, it must have been a relief to see a deep ball actually connect in something like game conditions.

“It was good to see,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “That was an unbelievable throw (by Stafford) across his body. We want to be efficient and explosive, and that was a great example of creating explosives.

The scrimmage in front of bleachers full of mostly Cowboys fans at Dallas’ training site was the Rams’ first chance to go against another team since camp opened July 28.

As often happens in a format where players starved for competition must tread a line between tackling (prohibited) and delivering “pro thuds” (encouaged), there were scuffles, one involving Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

But there was enough real work to occupy two practice fields.

McVay spent most of his time on the field where the Rams’ offense and Cowboys’ defense squared off in scripted situations.

A few things stood out.

With questions to answer in the backfield after Cam Akers’ Achilles injury, Darrell Henderson took most of the handoffs, followed by seventh-round draft pick Jake Funk and second-year running back Xavier Jones.

McVay noted that Henderson broke a run around right end and Funk got loose in a red-zone series.

“We’ll continue to evaluate,” the coach said.

It was natural to watch how Stafford worked with his receivers.

Because McVay doesn’t play starters in preseason games, Saturday’s scrimmage and two upcoming against the Raiders will be the only chances to see the new quarterback in anything close to a game before the Sept. 12 regular-season opener against the Bears at SoFi Stadium.

By unofficial count, Stafford completed 24 of 33 passes, and had one intercepted, in the drills against the Cowboys. Second-year Ram Bryce Perkins went 6 for 6, and ex-Steelers backup Duck Hodges went 7 for 9. John Wolford is out 10-14 days after having his appendix removed Friday.

Kupp caught the most passes from Stafford, and wide receiver Robert Woods and tight end Tyler Higbee caught a handful.

Stafford and Jackson missed more than they hit. But all of those passes were downfield. It only took one completion to reassure Rams onlookers.

Kupp was happy to see it, being one of the short-ball receivers who hope to have more room to operate because Jackson stretches defenses.

“You can see the feel they have for each other, and just the ability for DeSean to track the ball like he has, and Matthew getting the ball up there and putting air under it and letting guys run underneath it,” Kupp said.

“We love having DeSean Jackson out here.”

Dallas

Gayle Jackson, President, of The DeSean Jackson Foundation, and mother of NFL All Pro Washington Redskin, DeSean Jackson, appeals to their Washington Redskins’ fan base to join her in reaching across the playing field to support a fundraiser for Suzanne Mitchell, former Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader.  Suzanne was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer last June.  Gayle and DeSean Jackson co-founded The DeSean Jackson Foundation in 2009 after William “Bill” Jackson, DeSean’s father died from Pancreatic Cancer while DeSean was a rookie with the Philadelphia Eagles.   “We must put aside our team affiliation and brand loyalty to become One Team for One Purpose–to eradicate this dreadful disease”, states Gayle Jackson.

Suzanne Mitchell joined the Dallas Cowboys Football Club in 1975. The story goes she sat across the desk from her soon to be employer Texas E. Schramm and when he asked the traditional interview question of where she wanted to be in five years, Suzanne gave a not so traditional response, “Your chair looks pretty comfortable”. Tex’s laughter roared across the desk as he shook her hand and said, “You’re hired”. Thus began an incredible journey. Suzanne sometimes known as “Mom”, Mitch or the Iron Butterfly was asked by Tex to take over the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders in “her spare time” after the 1976 Super Bowl. And takeover she did, she took a group of young women that were not that well known and put them on a national stage, overnight they were America’s Sweethearts and the most sought after group in the country. And over the next decade almost every other professional football team followed her lead. She is known in the NFL Cheerleading circle as the “Godmother of professional cheerleaders”.
Born in Fort Worth, this Texas Legend has traveled the world and was quite successful before joining the Cowboys organization, she worked for a Park Avenue Publishing House as well for the U.S. Ski Team, but it was as Director of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders where Suzanne found her home and enjoyed tremendous success. She made two Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders TV movies with ABC, two episodes of the Love Boat, appeared on too many TV shows to list as well as the Country Music Awards. Unlike today as Director she went on every single DOD/ USO Tour with her girls. Suzanne spent nine Christmas on the DMZ in Korea and had a marine not pushed her head out of the way she would have been shot right between the eyes by PLO random gunfire in Beirut in 1983. Her journey is so exciting and so outrageous at times does not seem real, but Suzanne not only lived every single moment, she was in charge at a time when few women were in charge. She was at the helm orchestrating every move, every press release, every routine, and every appearance, she wrote all copy and even the fan mail for security purposes went to Suzanne first and then the girls. One of her earlier employers was quoted as saying Suzanne did the work of six people and always gave 500%.
The message Suzanne wanted to depart on her girls the most was “it is not what is happening to them that is important, but what is happening thru them”. Last June Suzanne was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Pancreatic Cancer is the deadliest of all cancers with no cure and no earlier detection. Only 6% of those diagnosed live five years beyond diagnosis and more research for this deadly cancer is desperately needed. Once diagnosed Suzanne started her campaign to help others. Her message of “what happens thru you” is more relevant at this moment than ever before. Suzanne and her team are fighting to raise money and awareness of Pancreatic Cancer so that others never experience this dreadful disease.

For Immediate Release

Final37

Gayle Jackson, President, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation, and mother of Washington Redskins’ wide receiver DeSean Jackson, and NFL Moms in LA, completed their 2015 Read Across America campaign at 186th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles where Principal Marcia Sidney-Reed and the entire student population welcomed the “Moms” in grand style.  Mrs. Jackson was humbled and honored by the display of Washington Redskins’ signs and jerseys; and, took advantage of the opportunity to engage the students in a “mock Washington Redskins’ pep rally” and chant for quarterback, RG III.

Final12

The 186th Street Elementary School students, staff, and parents enjoyed a Reading Pajama Party to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on Friday, March 6, 2015 with a reading celebration and a movie.  Back to read and promote literacy, by popular demand, were our NFL football moms from the Western Region of the Professional Football Players Mothers Association (PFPMA). Gayle Jackson, the President, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation, mother of Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson who also was representing WOW, the official Washington Redskins’ female fan club over 100,000 strong, donated her son’s children’s book entitled, No Bullies in the Huddle written with Dr. William T. Hoston and illustrated by Charlie Neerman to the Wise Owl Nation.  Gayle Jackson shared that the book deals with bullying awareness and how students can deal with this problem. LaTonya Scandrick, mother of Orlando Scandrick from the Dallas Cowboys, brought Orlando’s five year old twin daughters to join in the fun; DeSean’s aunt, Hattie Davis, supported the reading party, too.  This is the fourth year the NFL moms have come to read to the little owls.

Students were able to enjoy a choice of stories read by students, teachers, and the NFL moms in different rooms with themes to promote a college-going culture at the beginning of the event.  The students heard fairytales in the USC Trojans’ Arena, animal stories in the UCLA Bruins’ Den, stories of peace to share an appreciation for diversity in the LMU Lions’ Lair, and story time with Dr. Seuss in the Arts Academy with the NFL moms.  After the students finished listening to the stories, they received a free book to increase their pleasure reading libraries at home and support the academic play of reading 15-30 minutes every evening called by Principal Reed. The play is called Operation R.E.E.D. (Read Every Evening Diligently).

The highlight of the evening was having the children bring their sleeping bags into the auditorium, sit on the floor with their friends, and culminate the Reading Pajama Party with popcorn and watching Disney’s movie Big Hero 6.  The room was filled with excited children and supportive parents.  The sight of students and parents enjoying an evening of quality entertainment and family fun time made the event a great success of Reading Across America.

Marcia Sidney-Reed , Principal, 186th Street Elementary School

Thank You, 186th Street Elementary from NFL Moms and their sons.
